Life Through Song

My wife and I have been dealing with a lot lately. We both feel overly stressed by a number of things in life. Not always big things... but sometimes just lots of little nagging or troublesome issues.

As we've spent the last few weeks talking through things, we've both made comments about songs that God has seemingly used to remind us of His truths, His love for us and our need to trust in Him.

As someone drawn to music, it is no secret that songs have played a large part in my life.

Now don't get me wrong, songs are not a replacement for prayer, Bible reading, counsel of wise friends, etc.. but yet I truly believe that some songs have a way of both preparing our hearts to be instructed and doing the instruction at the same time.

I'd like to hear from you (all 3 people who read my rantings!) as to which songs God has used to speak into your lives recently. What is it about the song that draws you to it? What truths are you being reminded of when you listen?

Just curious...

In Him,
Jim

Man - many songs! Hard to choose from!

There were some signature songs back in my early days at Willow that just spoke in huge ways to me and that we did a lot. I remember doing this song - Peace Be Still by Al Denson - as I was just a growing young Christian and volunteering there - and then later on directing it when I was on staff. We did this many times coming out of some very moving dramas. Through many seasons of life in different ways, it's always been one of the most comforting songs I've ever heard. It's very simple - nothing fancy, but just speaks such a huge yet simple truth of God in such a beautiful way. Part of it for me too is remembering some of the most wonderful people I've ever known from our team in those days singing it - great friends and ministry partners.

It appears now that the song is out of print - not available on itunes or Amazon. I do have a copy of it if anyone wants it if you have not heard it - I'll send it to you. The recording is very dated sounding, but the song itself is great. I think this is a song I want someday at my funeral - that good. Here are the lyrics.

Peace Be Still
- Al Denson

Be not dismayed, though it seems like the storms will never end
Be not afraid, when it seems like you haven't got a friend
The storms are raging, you don't have to run and hide
The Lord is faithful to heal the lonely heart inside

Peace be still
The Father loves you
Peace be still
The Father loves you
And no matter where you are
Or where you've been
I'm am sure He wants you to know
He won't let go

Be not dismayed, though it seems like the hurt will never end
Be still and know the Father will never let you go
The pain is raging, you don't have to run and hide
The Lord is faithful to heal the hurting heart inside

Peace be still
The Father loves you
Peace be still
The Father loves you
And no matter where you are
Or where you've been
I'm am sure He wants you to know
He won't let go

And no matter where you are
Or where you've been
I am sure He wants you to know
He won't let go

Charlie Hall's "Come for Me" has been on my heart a LOT lately. When I am feeling overwhelmed and/or worthless, this song reminds me about how everything (am even I)will be made right:

Verse 1
Jesus come take me away, I long to see Your face
This world is broken yet beautifully made,
Jesus come take me away

Jesus I’ll patiently wait, till like a vapor I’ll fade
Help me fulfill all your dreams for these days,
Jesus I’ll patiently wait

You’ll come again with a shout,
like a thief in the night you’ll come riding on clouds
Finally the voice I have followed for life
has a glorious face that is lit up with light

And you’ll come for me, no more pain, peace,
No more fear, release
just lost and consumed with my glorious King,

Verse 2
Jesus today I am tired, I need your music to come and inspire
I give myself to be refined in this fire,
but Jesus today I’m so tired

Come for me

I agree that there are way too many songs to really pinpoint, but a couple that just touch my heart are Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone." When I sing the words to this song it so reminds me that I'm saved by God's amazing grace and it's almost like this big huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I can barely stand still when I get to the chorus and there's no way that those hands of mine can ever stay down but have to be lifted in praise to Him!

I guess this first song can totally segue right into the other two songs that come to mind. The first being Third Day's "Born Again" from their new "Revelation" album.

"Today I found myself after searching all these years

And the man that I saw wasn’t at all who I thought he’d be

I was lost when you found me here

I was broken beyond repair

Then you came along and sang your song over me

Feels like I’m born again, feels like I’m living

For the very first time in my life".

The last song is by Paul Wilbur, one of my very favorite Messianic worship leaders, called "In Your Presence o God".

"In your presence
That´s where I am strong
In Your presence
O Lord my God
In Your presence
That´s where I belong
Seeking Your face
Touching Your grace
In the cleft of the Rock
In Your presence O God.

I want to go
Where the rivers
Cannot overflow me
Where my feet are
On he Rock
I want to hide
Where the blazing
Fire cannot burn me
In your presence O God

I want to hide
Where the flood of
Evil cannot reach me
Where I´m covered by the blood
I want to be where
The schemes of darkness
Cannot touch me
In Your presence O God.

You are my firm foundation
I trust in You all day long
I am Your child
And Your servant
And you are my
Strength and my song
You´re my song

Seeking Your face
Touching Your grace
In the cleft of the Rock
In Your presence O God
In Your presence.
In Your presence O God
In Your presence O God"

Need I say anymore!
